Many owners of small mammals are surprised to learn that all pets need at least an annual checkup with a veterinarian. Our veterinarians recommend check-ups at least once a year for young, healthy pets and twice a year for geriatric animals. There are two reasons for this. First, since most pets, including small mammals, have shorter lives than people do, getting a checkup only once a year is like you going to your doctor every 5-10 years. This is too long to wait to find out if something is wrong with your pet. Second, early detection and treatment of disease is very important for giving your pet the best prognosis for recovery from disease and is less expensive than treating a serious problem.

Hamsters, Gerbils, Guinea Pigs, Hedgehogs and Other Rodents
Your first veterinary visit can help prevent well-intentioned owners from doing the wrong thing and ultimately contributing to poor health and an inferior quality of life. Common conditions of pet rodents include respiratory diseases, gastrointestinal problems, dental problems, and tumors. Our team of pet care professionals will look for signs of these conditions and answer any questions you may have.
Rabbits
We know that caring for rabbits requires special knowledge and experience, so rest assured that your loved ones are in good hands at Innovo. Common conditions of pet rabbits include upper respiratory tract infections (snuffles), internal and external parasites, dental disease, gastrointestinal (GI) stasis, uterine problems (infections or cancer), and pododermatitis (foot sores or sore hocks).
Ferrets
At your visit, your veterinarian will discuss proper diet, housing, and toys for the ferret. A vaccination program will be set up, a fecal sample will be checked for worms or other intestinal parasites, and the ferret may be started on heartworm preventative.
Once a ferret reaches 3 years of age, we recommend a complete geriatric work-up, which includes an EKG, urinalysis, blood tests and radiographs (X-rays). This will allow for the early detection of diseases so commonly seen in older ferrets, such as cardiomyopathy and cancer.
Birds
While most avian diseases can affect every species, some species are more prone to develop certain conditions. By being familiar with various conditions that commonly affect a certain species, our veterinarians are able to formulate a diagnostic and treatment protocol resulting in a correct diagnosis and cure for your bird’s illness.
Snakes, Lizards and Other Reptiles
Not all pets are fluffy! With a whole host of unique nutrition and care needs, reptiles require a unique approach to veterinary care which our care team would love to provide. Common conditions of pet reptiles include infectious stomatitis (mouth rot), parasites, skin infections, inclusion body disease, respiratory disease, and septicemia.
