An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a test that is commonly used to assess the heart. Small painless electrodes are attached to specific points on the pet’s body to detect tiny electrical signals sent from the heart with each heartbeat. The EKG machine records these signals as a graphic printout or “tracing” on a strip of paper. Your veterinarian can examine the tracing to determine if the heart is beating properly.
By analyzing the electrical impulses produced as the heartbeats, abnormalities within the heart can be found. These abnormalities may include issues such as arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats), abnormalities in the size and structure of the various heart chambers, abnormal conduction, and other defects of the heart.
